Work My professional background is in a funny hybrid mix of geography, biology, and natural resources. I worked for seven years at a start-up working in global agriculture and food security; seven years in the federal government working on a mix of elevation, hydrography, and landcover change topics; three-ish years at two non-profits, working on land and wildlife conservation; and three years at a natural history museum, working on georeferencing wildlife. I've used maps and/or satellite imagery daily in every job listed above. I strive to work in places where the projects are interesting and where I feel like I'm doing at least some good for the world. ResearchGate link from when I used to publish.

Management and Leadership I've managed three different teams so far over six years, with reports ranging from brand new to the field to scientists more senior than myself. I entered management reluctantly, but I've found I really enjoy building cohesive and collaborative environments. My goal for every team is that every individual feels respected and hopeful about their current and future potential.
Sea Turtle drawing
Education I have a bachelor's in natural resource management, focusing on wildlife, a masters in GIS, and a PhD in Geography. My graduate school work involved nesting habitats of sea turtles, and I spent much of my undergraduate in a fish behavior lab. I have also taught numerous GIS and natural science sections as a TA and taught my own classes in atmospheric sciences to non-traditional college students.

Volunteering Throughout my life, I've tried to keep up volunteering in some way or another. I have volunteered for years at various animal shelters and with the emergency response team in New York City, as well as volunteering at several soup kitchens and a botanic garden. (And then there are some shorter-term stints, such as canvassing, beach clean-ups, and tutoring.)
Bird drawing
Hobbies My favorite hobby is picking up new hobbies and then moving on to others. Most things don't become a lifelong practice. I suppose if I had to narrow it down, I've spent the most time reading books, knitting, sewing, using watercolors/pencils/clay, and for a few years, taxidermy. Art and natural history museums bring me great joy.

Quick little doodles by me; HTML done by AI and me. (Not a huge AI fan for everything, but it's been a while since the geocities days and my HTML is rusty.) This page used to have a fancier canned design, but then I got nostalgic for the 90s.
